European Green Capital

In the past years Pécs implemented several environmental protection investments. These developmental programmes and organisations that manage these activities qualify our city to win the “European Green Capital” title.

Following the successful application and comprehensive experience for the 2010 European Capital of Culture, Pécs regularly wins and implements substantial European projects. Also, due to the grandiose 2010 festival, local residents are much more receptive to cultural and environmental programmes and improvements. Objectives designated in the philosophy of the Green Capital competition demand the requirement that not only a narrow layer of society but the entire population should contribute to and benefit from the success of the project.

Since the establishment of the “European Green Capital” award in 2010, it is without a precedent that a city of a less developed region of Central and Eastern European region would have won this title. Therefore obtaining this respected honour would serve as a highly beneficial contribution to the reputation of Pécs.

Pécs On The Green Way

Based on the improvements and achievements of environmental protection activities, the Pécs General Assembly made a decision on the application for the “European Green Capital” title. The purpose of this action is to unite in one all measures, and to express strong commitment for dealing with the increasingly important environmental issues. Priority goal are to provide effective and improving changes and to guarantee prosperous life chances for the future generations.

Apart from the relevance and value of obtaining this prestigious title, the results of this contest will be perceived by all residents. High quality of life and the healthy environment are becoming of high appreciation. This advantage can serve as a strong impulse for creating jobs, research development and the establishment of new industries, since winning this title can promote the Pécs projects.
